There are different types of earphones and different terminology for them. Loosely we call all of them earphones and sometime we use all the names interchangeably for all the different types. Let’s learn the earphones types and what we should call them.

Headphones

The earphones that hangs on the outside of the ear but with a head clip is generally called as headphones. This generally covers the whole ear and noise interference is less. These are generally safe to use with good quality sound but difficult to wear for long time because of the head clip.

Earbuds

The earphones that enters inside the ear but does not go inside the ear canal is known as earbuds. These are safe and easy to use (comfortable), but they interfere with external noise.

Canalphones / In-ear Headphones

The earphones that goes inside the ear canal is known as canalphones or in-ear headphones. These provide high quality audio experience and comfortable to use. But the risk on ear is more since it goes inside the ear canal.
