Thomso – 2016, the annual youth festival of IIT Roorkee is going to be held from 21st to 23rd October. Thomso is recognized as one of the greatest and the grandest youth festivals of India. Thomso encompasses in itself lavish history, splendid culture and a profoundly rich heritage of IIT Roorkee.
IIT Roorkee, one of the oldest engineering college of India, earlier known as Thomason College of Civil Engineering (1853-1948) was established in 1847 in British India by the then lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason. The fest took the name “Thomso” in 1982 inspired by the founder, and holds to it to this day. Recognizing this event of gargantuan proportions, the Government of Uttarakhand proclaimed Thomso as the “Annual Youth Festival of Uttarakhand“.
The 33rd edition of 2015 witnessed a footfall of about 40,000, making it the largest cultural fest of Northern India. Thomso plays host to a multitude of talented scholars and media moguls in an annual celebration of culture and intellect. Thomso now celebrates its 34th year, with this year’s theme being “Song of the Wildflower”.
In its 34th Chapter, Thomso has been graced with some of the most enlightening personalities, including Sonu Nigam, Shaan, KK, Farhan Akhtar, Sushmita Sen, Raghu Dixit, Indian Ocean and innumerably more. From fearsome competitions to lavish carnivals, celebrating art, culture and expression with an overflow of youthful excitement and energy, Thomso is certainly the place to be!
Thomso believes that nothing serves as a better testament to the human brilliance than the way we manifest our intellect and artistry into our culture; and in all honesty, no decade has had a culture as extravagantly adorned with dreams and unyielding ambition as the ‘70s. The beauty of this decade lied in the psychedelic music of The Beatles, the avant-garde innovations from the garage of Steve Jobs, and the labs of Stephen Hawking. Fitting in was not the way to go any more. Ingenuity and passion had taken the driver’s seat, leading us all to a world where being a maverick was not frowned upon.
So on this 21st – 23rd October let’s relive the spirit of the 70’s and “Discover the Proud misfit with a weary soul” and set it free. After-all the best thing you can be is yourself. This October, we aim to recreate this decade and drench in its essence by doing just that.
