IIITs in India hold the status of Institutes of National Importance. With the acronym “IIIT” there are 3 different chains of institutes:

IIIT stands for mostly : Indian Institute of Information Technology

: International Institute of Information Technology

IIIT Delhi stands for   : Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi

All these institutes maintain equal level of technical standard. To know more about the IIITs follow the post IIITs in India

Do check the recent ranking of IIITs: Ranking of IIITs in India 2016

In this post all the IIITs have been ranked.

Grading System used for this ranking:

A+ : 10

A : 9

B : 8

C : 7

D : 6

Following are the parameters considered for preparing the ranking:

1. Age:

Along with age everything gets maturity. Institute infrastructure, accreditation, facilities etc. improve along with age. So, age of the institute is a parameter to be considered while ranking. The age of the institute has been evaluated as follows

If the institute is 10 or more than 10 years old then A+

If the institute age is in between 5 to 10 years then A

If the institute age is in between 1 to 5 years then B

If the institute is less than 1 year old then C

2. Faculty:

No doubt quality of faculties and faculty strength are important parameters to decide about the quality of institutions. While ranking on faculties following parameters have been considered:

Faculty Qualification and the Institutes from where they got graduated

Faculty research work

Faculty strength

3. Infrastructure:

To rank a technical institute, consideration of infrastructure is a must. Infrastructure includes many components as follows

Academic Buildings and Proper Classrooms

Library

Hostel Buildings

Canteen and Play Grounds

Lab Equipment

Institute Website

4. Placement:

After all placement creates the actual impression of any institute. At the end of the day everyone wants a pretty job with handsome salary. So no way placement statistics can be ignored while ranking an institute. Following are the placement parameters which have been considered

Highest Package

Average Package

Onsite job offers

Number of companies visited

Recruiters

5. Research:

To improve the quality of technical education, it is very important that the institute should promote the research environment within the campus. So “Research” has been considered as a key parameter while ranking. Following are the areas considered for grading on research

Publications of the institute members

Total number of PhD scholars

Frequency of Workshop, Seminar and Conferences organized by the institute

Research collaborations of the institute

6. Location:

Location of the institute always is an important factor. Better location creates better opportunities at the time of study and after the study as well. Of-course for a student from north east; “IIIT Guwahati” would be a better option than “IIIT Delhi”, though Delhi is a better location than Guwahati from opportunity point of view.

7. Brand Name:

After all brand name matters. At-least it gives a sense of satisfaction.

RANKING of IIITs in INDIA:

IIIT Ranking

If any 2 or more IIITs are having same Overall Point then the ordering among them has been done based on a particular parameter. The preference order of the parameters as follows:

1. Age in terms of Year

2. Brand

3. Location

4. Infrastructure

5. Placement

6. Faculty

7. Research

why you think that for equal points preference should be age…..i think 4,5,6,7 should be more preferred. That way iiit delhi is better then iiit gwalior

      Rohit,

I agree with you, but when we talk about an institute of National importance, then we believe with time the institute improves in all these parameters. It is just a ranking. Otherwise the overall points for both the institutes are same. Individual parameter grading are also there. There is no doubt according to research and location IIIT Delhi is superior than IIIT Gwalior.

IIIT are those which are set-up, Funded and Managed by Ministry of Human Resource Development.[2] The Centrally funded institution of technical and science education has 4 IIITs. The addition of new IIITs as Institutes of National Importance was proposed under the Indian Institutes of Information Technology Bill 2010. This bill, renamed as IIIT Bill 2014, was passed by the Parliament on December 1, 2014, thus granting the status of Institutes of National Importance upon the 4 IIITs:[3]
Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad
Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Jabalpur
Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Gwalior
Indian Institute of Information Technology Design & Manufacturing Kancheepuram

        Hi Somesh,

This article which you are referring is published in 2015. At that time IIIT Lucknow was very new and none of its batches were passed out. So, it was given a ‘D’ in placement. Of-course, the placement status has improved much for IIIT Lucknow now-a-days.

        Hi Vanam,

With your rank you might get a seat in NIT/IIIT in special rounds. Try for lower ranked NITs for branches like civil, chemical, food processing etc.

You said ” Institute infrastructure, accreditation, facilities etc. improve along with age” . You must visit IIIT Delhi atleast once to check it’s infrastructure & facilities . Students of DTU(oldest engineering college in Delhi) says that we have better infrastructure & facilities than their’s.
So IIIT Delhi deserves a A+in Infrastructure.

Moreover if you compare placements stats of IIIT Delhi & IIIT Hyderabad . Check out this
    http://iiit.ac.in/placements/placement2015/placement14.php
    https://www.iiitd.ac.in/placement/stats

Highest salary of IIITD is more than IIITH , and also average salary is comparable.

      Hey IIITian,

Thanks for your comment. I guess I underestimated my own college a little bit 🙂
I have spent 2 years @ IIIT-D my mate. I still feel we need more land to improve the infrastructure to meet the level which it actually stands for. Again ECE department needs expansion of LABs.

I have different view when you say that IIIT Delhi is better than IIIT Gwalior.
IIIT Gwalior is an Autonomous Institue of MHRD Government of India whereas IIIT Delhi is a State University under Delhi Government. (https://www.iiitd.ac.in/about http://www.iiitm.ac.in/)
Just because acronym of IIIT Delhi matches with other IIIT’s, it doesn’t become a part of IIIT family.
Here is list of IIIT’s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Institutes_of_Information_Technology Hence IIIT delhi shouldn’t be compared with other IIIT’s. IIIT Delhi should be regarded a good State government college but IIIT’s are a different league altogether.
IIIT Gwalior is Institute of national importance whereas IIIT Delhi is not. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Institutes_of_National_Importance )
Your have not considered funding as a parameter for ranking. Funding is backbone of any institute. IIIT Gwalior is funded by MHRD Government of India whereas IIIT Delhi is funded by delhi government.
If you consider other sites you will find IIIT Gwalior is significantly ahead of IIIT Delhi in rankings. http://collegepravesh.com/engineering-colleges

      Dear Bhavya,

That is why IIIT Gwalior has been ranked higher than IIIT Delhi though they have equal overall points. That is why IIIT Delhi has been given ‘B’ for its brand. But you would definitely agree that the research quality and the faculty quality of IIIT Delhi is much better than IIIT Gwalior. Location is anyways a positive point with IIIT Delhi.
      https://www.iiitd.ac.in/research
      https://www.iiitd.ac.in/people/faculty

I agree with you that, ‘Funding’ could have been considered as a separate point while ranking.

Its good to have a different view but who said it to you that is is not an institute of national importance ? Do visit this link
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indraprastha_Institute_of_Information_Technology
Secondly on what basis you are saying if it is a part of IIIT family or not. Even by going on the basis of your criteria, IIIT Hyderabad should not be a part as well.
Do get your facts right and having personal views don’t change the facts bro!

Hey, Bhavya keep your fact right and must ensure IIIT-Delhi comes in league of IIITs. If you have a doubt please check this link of AICTE http://www.aicte-india.org/iiit.php. One more things tag does not help for long time without performance.

Best institute is one who is able to motivate her students and realize them their value rather making them puppet. Best institutes nourish their students with great value and wisdom they educate them so that they can use their learning. I have seen there is no joy among students and also in professors while pursuing research and teaching. All are suffocated and doing the things lifelessly. I never understand why research become so painful may be because of people want to secure their future!.

At the end i want to say there may be possibility of good infrastructure, good and qualified professor from top universities, good placement and so on. But there is no life, it is not because of life is absent rather it is because of our ignorance. May be nobody understand what i am saying, it is alright, as different people have different thought level and understanding. It does not matter superior or inferior because it can be developed. Wherever life is missing there is no meaning of doing the thing.

In regards of higher education, bachelors have no understanding and i understand perfectly why exception always there.

I want to state it very clearly and boldly that IIIT Delhi is not an Institute of National Importance. All those who disagree may read the last page of IIIT Act passed by Parliament in 2014. http://www.iiitdmj.ac.in/download/IIIT%20Act%2030_of_2014.pdf
Only 4 IIIT’s hold the status of Institute of National Importance i.e. IIIT-Allahabad, IIIT-Gwalior, IIIT Design and Manufacturing Jabalpur and IIIT Design and Manufacturing Kancheepuram.
One can play with Wikipedia but not with an act of Parliament. Here are other links http://www.thehindu.com/features/education/lok-sabha-passes-iiit-bill/article6636707.ece
    http://www.outlookindia.com/news/article/iiit-bill-passed-by-parliament/870387

Only Parliament of India has the authority to grant status of Institue of National Importance. Please quote some newspaper or Parliament Act where IIIT-D is given such status else don’t create misconceptions.
IIIT Hyderabad is a good college but just like IIITD, it does not fall in the league of “Indian Institutes”.

Actually there are only 4 IIIT in the country namely allahabad, gwalior, jabalpur, kanchipurum.
rest of them are either state colleges or private institutions. Such a comparison is not possible.
Author has no clarity about these institution. Above four institutions ( allahabad, gwalior, jabalpur, kanchipurum) has been declared as institute of national importance.

      Well Nitish,

Deciding on whose brand is better for the two who are of almost equal status is again a personal view. We have decided on brand as A+ whose name starts with “Indian”. After a long run after all the word “Indian” on your graduating institute name gives you satisfaction and respect. Of course you can find in all other components IIIT Hyderabad is ahead of IIIT Gwalior.

      Dear Archita,

If you can go to a bit older IIIT then it would be good. But still you can consider IIIT Kurnool as IIITs are the fastest growing institutes in India. IIITs are small institutes and they only focus on 2 to 3 branches. So the goals are very directed over here. Also IIITs are getting industry partnership, so you would get more challenging environment to learn more. IIITDM Kancheepuram, Chennai (a very good institute) is the mentor institute of IIIT Kurnool. You would get lot of practical exposure in this college.

I feel IIIT Kurnool is a good choice.

      All the Best!!!

IIIT Dharwad is setup by Government of India (MHRD), Government of Karnataka and Industry Partners. Infosys is taking special care to develop this institute. This institute is definitely a good one. You would get good faculty and infrastructure.

        Go for it.

      2. IIIT Gwalior (5 Yrs B.Tech + M.Tech in IT) [If you are interested for Ph.D in future then you can go for this also. It will save your 1 year as it is an integrated B.Tech M.Tech Program]
      3. NIT Durgapur (B.tech IT)
      4. NIT Raipur (B.tech IT)
      5. NIT Andhra Pradesh (CSE) (I have kept this at the end only because this is a very new institute and it must not have any organized format of placement and research group)

It depends on which type of institutes you have chosen in the online counseling form. You can also add the choice in second round of counseling.

No doubt IIIT Kancheepuram is much better than JNTU Kakinada. I would say she must join IIIT Kancheepuram. It’s also good that she would complete her Masters also along with Bachelors. She would save one year and she can go for higher studies if she would be interested. Also she can seat for the fantastic placement of IIIT Kancheepuram.

Go for IIIT Kancheepuram. Though OU is a good university, but for technical education IIIT is preferable. Also IIIT Kancheepuram is performing very nice since last few years. Even Mechanical branch is considered as ever green branch.

      Ravi,

Both IIIT Pune as well as IIIT Ranchi are starting their academic sessions from this year 2016. So, both would be at equivalent level. I personally prefer Pune city than Ranchi 🙂

So, if you have both the choices in your hand then I would say go for IIIT Pune as the city has enough industries, so that you need not to go here and there for internships during your B.Tech. But if you have only choice of IIIT Ranchi right now, then I would suggest you should not leave the offer as it would also be an equivalently good institute.

I believe you are not talking about International Institute of Information Technology (I²IT) Pune, but must be talking about Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Pune. Don’t go for (I²IT) Pune – it is a private institute though a good one.

      Dear Sir,

RV college of Engineering is a good engineering institute. It is an old institute and it has good academic as well as placement record. But I would suggest you to go with IIIT Kottayam (Indian Institute of Information Technology Kottayam). RVCE is a private institute, where as IIIT Kottayam is a central government institute and the IIITs are the new emerging institutes. No doubt in next couple of years IIIT Kottayam would cross the level of RVCE. Your daughter would get better exposure, good faculties and good academic environment in IIIT Kottayam. Don’t worry about placement (as it is a new institute we don’t have any placement record for this one), IIITs have always a good placement record. Also the semester fees of RVCE must be higher than IIIT Kottyam.

IIIT Bhubaneswar is a good institute. But I would suggest you should try for the newly introduced IIITs (Indian Institute of Information Technology) [starting their academic sessions this year or last year]. If not possible then IIIT Bhubaneswar is also a good choice.

      My suggestions are

      IIIT Dharwad,
      IIIT Kota,
      IIIT Lucknow,
      IIIT Kurnool,
      IIIT ranchi,
      IIIT Pune (not the I²IT),
      IIIT Una

No matter whether it is B.tech or M.tech, IIIT Vadodra is much better than Jaypee Noida. Jaypee Noida is a good institute but it is a private one.

DAIIT (Dhirubhai Ambani institute of Information technology) is the mentor institute for IIIT Vadodra. DIIACT is very much focused on research and IIIT Vadodra as well. You will get very good faculties over there. As a central Govt. institute the infrastructure must be very good.

      Hi Sekhar,

IIIT Delhi, IIIT Bangalore and IIIT Hyderabad all 3 are equally good institutes in India and all 3 give bright and broader career prospective to students.

Now coming to Computer Engineering and ECE. Definitely CSE has more career scope and higher package probability than ECE at least at the start of the career. So you can eliminate the ECE in IIIT Hyderabad option.

Now Between CSE in IIIT Delhi and IIIT Bangalore, it’s a real tough decision to be taken. Both are good institutes and CSE branch is equally good in both the institutes. IIIT Bangalore is bit older than IIIT Delhi and has a good placement record, but I feel IIIT Delhi has good faculty list and greater scope for research. In my knowledge, IIIT Delhi has also good CSE Placement record.

From my side thumbs up for both IIIT Delhi and Bangalore. Study wise I am sure you won’t regret if you go to any of these two. Now you can take the decision on the basis of other parameter like being in which city would be more convenient to you or like that.

      All the best!

In your last comment you had a option of IIIT Hyderabad also. ECE in IIIT hyderabad would be better than CSE or ECE in any of the institutes you have mentioned in this comment (you can think otherwise if your son is very much passionate about CSE). I agree all these institutes are also good ones but not better than IIIT Hyderabad. I would say if still you have a chance to go to IIIT Hyderabad then go for it. Otherwise I would suggest my preference order of the institutes in the same order you mentioned in the comment.

Dear Pooja, It seems it’s difficult to get a seat in any NIT or IIIT with your general rank in the Round 1 of your counseling, other than the NITs and IIITs in North East and few other.

But their is a fair chance of getting a seat with you OBC rank in the good NIT as well as in IIIT for the rare branches in the 1st Round.

It seems like you can get a demanding branch like CSE, EE, ME etc with your OBC rank or even with your general rank in the later phase of the counseling rounds (say Round 4 or 5).

One other advice I want to give you that, you can try for 5 years integrated (B.Tech + M.Tech) degree. You can get a good NIT or IIITs in the 1st round with your rank even for demanding branches for this integrated degrees. The benefit is you can complete your B.Tech and M.Tech at a stretch.

You might get in new NITs. Seems tough to get into old NIT in 1st round of counseling. But there are chances in further round of counseling. Again depends which particular branch you are opting for. You can refer to my reply to Pooja (you can go down in the comment section to find the reply) for more detailed explanation.

Coming to the 2nd question, I would suggest don’t worry about the interviews from the day one. Focus on learning stuffs. If you are good in your concept, none of the interview is tough. Also remember tougher the path sweeter the result.

      https://www.igniteengineers.com/ranking-of-iiits-in-india/#comment-6162

Also you can change your branch preference if you are not very much passionate about ECE/EE. It will help you to get into a NIT also. Remember if you are passionate about ECE then go for it no matter which institute it is. If not then don’t forget BRAND matters! It gives you a better study environment, better exposure, better future outlook and better placement opportunities.

      Dear Aiswarya,

Both NIT Calicut and IIIT Kancheepuram are very good institute. NIT Calicut is an old well established institute with a very strong alumni network. IIIT Kancheepuram is relatively new institute with very good faculties and with a design approach course structure. Both the institutes have no doubt good placement record, and brand value.

Branch choice should always be up to you. If you are very much keen for a particular branch then go for it no matter whether it is NIT Calicut or IIIT Kancheepuram. if you are not sure about the specialization then In my suggestion you should go for CSE IIIT Kancheepuram.

To get a clear prospective about 4 years course and 5 years course please refer to the below link:

          Thank you for your appreciation.
Computer Science branch has relatively more job opportunities than the other branches. Core branches like Electrical, Civil, Mechanical etc. has most of the opportunities in Govt. sectors which is no doubt not plenty. In computer science you can get into Govt., Private and also you can think about starting up something new by yourself.

Hope you get the answer 🙂

      Dear Aiswa,
I hope you have wrongly typed it as iit Pune. It should be iiit Pune.

4 years B.Tech course is always preferred by industries than 5 years integrated courses. So, if you want to be in industry then I would suggest you to go for 4 year btech course in iiit Pune.

But integrated course is helpful if you want to go for further studies like PhD and want to pursue your career in academia.

City wise ofcourse I would prefer pune than Kancheepuram which is close to Chennai (a personal view).

IIIT pune is a very new institute and IIITs Kancheepuram is a old one and well established with good faculty members and good course structure.

Based on these facts take your decision. All the best.

No doubt IIIT/NIT are better than JNTU/state eamcet. But it looks difficult to get a seat in IIIT/NIT with a 66771 OBC-NCL rank. But I would suggest, don’t loose hope and try for new as well as North east IIIT/NIT till 4th or 5th round of counseling with the rare branches of engineering in your choice. You may get a seat.

      All the best.

      Dear Gotham,
If you have more interest in designing then you should definitely join IIITDM Kancheepuram ECE. Curriculum of this institute is more design based rather than theoretical approach. Otherwise you can choose for NIT Raipur. It is an old institute and strong alumni network. Ofcourse NIT brand ☺ always gives you a proud feeling. IIITDM Kancheepuram has another advantage of city (Chennai), so, more exposure expected.

My thumbs up for IIITDM Kancheepuram ECE.

Design curriculum means, all the course you will go through in your B.Tech must have some designing part and project based. So that you will get more engineering feeling rather than only going through the theory of the subjects and passing the examination.

IIITDM Kancheepuram Mechanical is also a good branch. But I would suggest you should wait for IIITDM ECE. Mechanical branch has has major opportunity in govt. sector. Where as you will find many corporate opportunities along with govt. in ECE. But this we need to understand, ECE will face larger competition in future also than Mechanical.

IIITDM Sricity is also a very good institute. They are working on few good projects on IoT (Internet on Thing) with a mission to make few nearby villages smart.

So, my preference order will be considering ECE and Mechanical as the only available options, as follows

      1. IIITDM Kancheepuram ECE
      2. IIIT Sricity ECE
      3. IIITDM Mechanical

If seats will not be filled by counseling rounds, then there must be spot allotment. This happens every year. If not in good NITs and IIITs, but definitely in newer ones.

      Dear Rameshji,

I guess, you mean IIIT Bangalore ECE in the last line. IIIT Bangalore is one of the best IIIT. I suppose your daughter is getting CSE in all the other IIITs as you have not mentioned any thing about the branch. My preference order will be as follows:

      1. IIIT Bangalore ECE
      2. IIIT Kanchipuram CSE
      3. IIIT Gwalior CSE
      4. IIIT Sricity CSE
      5. IIIT Jabalpur CSE

          Dear Rameshji,

If she is keen to go for CSE, then she should go for it. But still you can think about ECE once more in IIIT Bangalore. Because the institute is unbeatable among the opportunities you have currently, though other institutes are also good. Also she can find many overlapping subjects in both the branches CSE and ECE. Specialization like embedded systems which come under ECE require equal knowledge of CSE and ECE.

But if she is very much keen to go for CSE we should go with her interest and choice. Now coming to your 2nd question why I considered IIIT kancheepuram better than IIIT Gwalior has 2 specific reasons as mentioned below:
          1. IIIT Kancheepuram has a design based curriculum. Their curriculum is more project and practical base unlike the curriculum of other institutes.
          2. IIIT Kancheepuram is very close to the Chennai city. So, your daughter would get more exposure than IIIT Gwalior.

Of course IIIT Gwalior is also no doubt a very good and old institute.
One more thing, please convey to your daughter no matter what is the place, how the study curriculum is, how old and good institute it is, it will only create opportunity. Responsibility to grab the opportunity will be on her only.

Yes, IIIT Sricity CSE is better than IIIT Bhubaneswar CSE in terms of faculty. In terms of placement IIIT Bhubaneswar is equivalent to IIIT Sri City since it is an old institute. But I am sure after 4 years IIIT Sri City would be better in terms of placement as well…

These are two different brands of technical institutes. Indian Institute of Information Technologies are initiative of the government of India and carries an institute of national importance. But, many of them are very new and still in the growing phase. International Institute of Information Technologies are PPP (Private Public Partnership) bodies, where state government holds some share as well. However, if you will talk about IIIT Hyderabad, it is an excellent institute and probably is better than almost all the Indian Institute of Information Technologies.
