For the last few years IIITs are coming up as very good technical institutes and are performing as good as IITs in CSE and ECE field. Previous year we have published Ranking of IIITs in India. This post has been a very engaging post for the whole last year. We have observed students are showing a lot of interest to know the current ranking and status of IIITs. The aspiring students have followed this post very much and asked us their queries. We have cleared their doubts and tried our best to help them taking the right decision.

Now this year we have revisited the current status of all the IIITs (including the new ones) and prepared a new Ranking Table with few changes. We have considered almost all the same parameters which we have considered in the previous post but in a little bit different preference order to rank the IIITs.

Following are the parameters (written with the decreasing order of weightage) considered for preparing the ranking:

  1. Placement
  2. Research
  3. Faculty
  4. Infrastructure
  5. Location
  6. Age
  7. Mentor InstituteĀ (For the institutes getting started in 2016 & 2015)

Ranking of IIITs in India 2016:

IIITs Ranking India 2016
Ranking of IIITs in India 2016

Note: Please realize that the grading is relative. A ‘C’ or ‘D’ grade does not mean that very bad. It is just relatively bad than the good IIITs in this list.

The above list shows the ranking of IIITs which started on or before 2014. There are few IIITs which are started on 2015 and 2016. Many of the above measuring parameters can not be applied to them as these institutes are very young to be judged. Still we have just made a ranking based on the reputation of the Mentoring institute [MI] and the location of the institutes.

19. IIIT Dharwad [IIIT Bangalore & Infosys] (2015)

20. IIIT Kurnool [IIITDM Kancheepuram] (2015)

21. IIIT Kottayam [NIT Calicut & IIIT Hyderabad] (2015)

22. IIIT Naya Raipur [IIIT Bangalore] (2015)

23. IIIT Lucknow [IIIT Allahabad] (2015)

24. IIIT Manipur [IIT Guwahati] (2015)

25. IIIT Nagpur [VNIT Nagpur] (2016)

26. IIIT Pune [CoEP pune] (2016)

27. IIIT Ranchi [NIT Jamshedpur] (2016)

Note: This ranking of IIITsĀ has been prepared by the Ignite Engineers team through internal surveys and opinions based on the data available in the internet. No external surveys have been conducted to prepare the same.

Dear Harjit, most of the IIITs admit students from JEE Mains counseling, only except few. You can check the websites of IIIT Delhi, IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Bangalore for their admission process.

You’ve given IIIT Sonepat the last rank. But it’s classes are held at NIT KKR and placements are also held there. And previous year packages have been pretty good. I’m confused, should I take admission in it or not

      Dear Kartik,

Ofcourse IIIT Sonepat is a good institute. The ranking you find over here is only relative to the other existing IIITs only. All the new IIITs are running in their temporary campus (in the mentor NITs). So you will not find any issue with the faculty members and also the placements would be good. So you can take admission to IIIT Sonepat if you are not getting a seat in any of the IIIT ranked from 1 to 10.

Is IIIT Pune a better choice than IIIT Dharwad? The closing rank for Pune was about 23k while that for Dharwad was 27k for 2016. Please reply as soon as possible.

Both IIIT Pune and Dharwad are equally good. IIIT Pune, the additional advantage is the city. Pune is an industrial hub. IIIT Dharwad is again mentored by IIIT Bangalore and would get special attention from Infosys (+ve sign for IIIT Dharwad). So, both the institutes are neck to neck. Go with your personal preference.

      Dear Abhinav,

In my suggestion, you should go for IIIT Vadodara with CSE rather than IET with CSE. Though IET is an old institute with more than 30 years of legacy, and must have a strong alumni network, still following are the reasons why I am suggesting IIIT Vadodara:

      1. IIITs are young institutes with quality faculty members and striving for excel rather than the institutes like IET which are already stagnant.

      2. DAIICT is the mentor institute of IIIT Vadodara, and it’s faculties teach at IIIT Vadodara also. DAIICT is a very good and quality institute.

      3. CSE has more job opportunities than ECE in current scenario.

      4. After all Indian Institute of Information Technology – a brand

Are the lower IIITs and NITs (North East) a better option than the top colleges of IPU( MAIT/BVCOE) ?? In terms of exposure and placement ?

      Dear Abhay,

No doubt Institutes of National Importance like NITs and IIITs have their own charm. These Institutes have quality faculty members and government funding. Of course when you get passed out, you feel proud that you are carrying a national brand. Exposure and placement would be average if the institute is very new. If already 3 to 4 batches are passed out then you will get very good exposure and placement in the NITs and IIITs.

Of course if you are very much keen to be in Delhi, then MAIT/BVCOE are not bad choices.

      Dear Varun,

IIIT Delhi is growing exponentially. You are right that the current placement is way better in IIIT Delhi than IIIT Gwalior. The statistics was prepared keeping in mind about current as well as previous placement record, number of company visited and Alumni network. Since IIIT Gwalior is an old institute relative to IIIT Delhi, so the statistics shows a similar placement status keeping all the points mentioned above in mind.

But of course according to the present day, IIIT Delhi placement status is much better than IIIT Gwalior placement status.

You have not mentioned IIIT Lucknow in your ranking, its classes are being held at IIIT Allahabad with no difference between IIIT L and IIIT A students.
Should i consider it above IIIT Sricity and IIIT Guwahati in my preferance??

      Dear Shivam,

Since IIIT Lucknow has been started in the year of 2015, so I have not mentioned it in the ranking table. But you can find its name in the same post with other new IIITs which have been started in 2015 or 2016.

Of course IIIT Lucknow is running in IIIT Allahabad campus with no difference than IIIT Allahabad, but at some point of time it has to be shifted to its own campus with its own facilities and faculty members. Also it is very much unlikely that after 3 years placement would be combined for both the institutes. Most likely IIIT Lucknow would have its own placement. No doubt it would be good in every sense in its own campus, but IIIT Sricity and IIIT Guwahati are already running in their own campus. So, down the line 3 years, when you would sit for your placement, seems like these two institutes would be more stable than IIIT Lucknow.

But still I would say IIIT Lucknow is not a bad choice in comparison to IIIT Sricity / IIIT Guwahati.

      Dear Aman,
Let me put my preference order and then the reason though all the three institutes are good ones.

      1. USICT
      2. IIIT Sonepat
      3. JSS Noida

        USICT

+Ve – Started in 1999. A public university. So well established with good placement record, settled infrastructure and stable academic curriculum. You will spend 4 years in Delhi. So lot of exposure in the capital city.

        IIIT Sonepat

+Ve – Institute of national Importance with national brand name. Running in NIT Kurukshetra now. So you would get NIT atmosphere, faculty, lab from the day one. Even if it would shift to its own building in future, you would get good faculty, infrastructure and placement.

-Ve – The Institute is very new. So it would take few years to get settled and to build a good alumni network.

        JSS Noida

+Ve – Oldest among your options. Started in 1998. So well established. Good academic and placement record. You will be in NCR region.

      -Ve – Private institute

      2. IIIT Delhi
      3. DAIICT

If you are from Delhi NCR region then you can consider IIIT Delhi at the top.

Many central universities conduct their own entrance exams for PG program. They also accept GATE score. But it is good that you have another option to get into these universities if by some reason you could not qualify GATE. For example Tezpur University conducts TUEE, Pondicherry University, University of Hyderabad, Aligarh Muslim university conduct their own entrance exams and so on. You can check individually for different central universities.

I do agree that the PG programs in central universities are not that extensive like IITs, IIITs and NITs, but can be considered good. The best part is that the fees for these programs are very less as these universities are centrally funded. Also the competition to get into these universities are relatively less than the IITs, IIITs and NITs; so that you do not need to waste another year to get into a PG program but still you get enrolled to a good university. From my side thumbs up for PG program in Central Universities.

      My opinions are as below:

You might prefer to be in your home state, but NIT Andhra Pradesh is a tough target for CSE branch… You may get through NIT Andhra may be in the last round or on spot entry using your OBC rank. Which would be a risky decision…

Even IIIT Sricity is is the same case. You might get through it may be towards the last round. According to your rank following might be the preferable order:
      1. IIIT Kurnool
      2. IIIT Pune
      3. IIIT Sri City
      4. IIIT Vadodara

You can try for couple of new NITs and IIITs in north east, where you might get a seat easily. If you want further information, then let me know.

Of course for other branch choice, you might get a fair chance of admission in NIT Andhra / IIIT Sri City as well…

Thanks a lot for the reply.

Can you please let me know the order of preference for below.

        NIT AP – CSE
        IIIT Sricity – CSE
        IIIT Sricity – ECE
        IIIT Kurnool – CSE
        IIIT Vadodara – CSE
        IIIT Vadodara – IT

And Is there any chance of getting Integrated course in IIIT Gwalior or any other old IIIT’s for my rank and how good are those courses ?

Thank you Very much for the help.

In my opinion, the preference order should be as below:

          IIIT Sricity ā€“ CSE
          NIT AP ā€“ CSE
          IIIT Vadodara ā€“ CSE
          IIIT Sricity ā€“ ECE
          IIIT Vadodara ā€“ IT
          IIIT Kurnool ā€“ CSE

There is a very rare chance getting Integrated course in IIIT Gwalior or any other old IIITā€™s for your rank. Integrated courses are considered good if you have a plan for higher studies (PhD) as you effectively save 1 year. But for job point of view 4 year B.Tech is considered better than the integrated course. Course structures are almost similar for both the programs.

            Hi Sidhartha,

Can you please help me with your valuable suggestions.

I have got CSE in private colleges VIT(Vellore) and Amrita main campus.

Confused to choose between CSE in the above colleges or CSE/IT in New IIIT’s such as IIITKurnool , IIIT Dharwad, IIIT Vadodara, IIIT Pune, IIIIT Sricity etc.

Can you please give your suggestion on this and give the order of preference.

And also any other colleges i can get into CSE/IT for my AIR 40532, OBC rank 10142.

            Thank you in advance.

            Hi Hemanth,

I would always recommend you to go for a IIIT (if you are getting a seat) even if it is new. The brand name of IIIT gives a value. Also IIITs are small institutes with only two or three branches and more focus on information technology which the Indian job market demands actually. You would also find good faculty members in IIITs than any private institute.

If you would ask me to choose any one between VIT and Amrita University, I would suggest VIT Vellore campus.

My preference order is as below:

            1. IIIT Vadodara
            2. IIIT Sricity
            3. IIIT Dharwad
            4. IIIT Kurnool
            5. IIIT Pune
            6. VIT Vellore
            7. Amrita University

With your rank I am hopeful that you should get a new IIIT or NIT in some later round. Any further query, let me know…

            Thank you so much.

I have finally decided not to join private colleges and join any of the below as per my analysis and your suggestions.

1 CSE – IIIT Sri City, Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh
2 CSE – NIT, Andhra Pradesh
3 CSE – IIIT, Vadodara, Gujrat
            4 CSE – IIIT Guwahati
            5 CSE – IIIT Dharwad
6 IT – IIIT, Vadodara, Gujrat
7 CSE – IIIT Kota, Rajasthan
            8 CSE – IIIT Bhubaneswar
            9 IT – IIIT Lucknow
10 CSE – IIIT Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh
            11 CSE – IIIT Pune
            12 CSE – IIIT Bhopal
            13 CSE – IIIT Surat
            14 CSE – IIIT Nagpur
15 CSE – IIIT Kalyani, West Bengal
            16 CSE – IIIT Kottayam
            17 CSE – IIIT Bhopal

Can you please let me know if any corrections in the preference order of the colleges or any suggestions.

            Hi Hemanth,

Great to hear that. Sorry for a late reply. I personally would exchange the preference order between IT ā€“ IIIT, Vadodara, Gujrat and CSE ā€“ IIIT Kota, Rajasthan. Otherwise the the preference order looks great. I believe the last one is IT ā€“ IIIT Bhopal as CSE ā€“ IIIT Bhopal is mentioned at place 12.

      Hi Rajat,

IIIT Vadodara and IIIT Guwahati both are equally good IIITs. Both are good institutes and are mentored by good institutes (IIITG by IIT Guwahati and IIIT Vadodara by DAIICT). Currently both are having similar infrastructure and placement status.

I would have chosen IIIT Guwahati since it is in north east region and in Guwahati (center of north East) so it would get more limelight and focus and importance there, but again you can have your own place preference and all. IIIT Vadodara has a place benefit as it is close to all the IT city of India than IIIT Guwahati and also mentored by DAIICT which is more focused Institute on Information Technology.

      FEE STRUCTURE:
IIIT Guwahati – Almost 1.2 Lakh per semester (ref – http://www.iiitg.ac.in/feestructure.php)
IIIT Vadodara – Almost 1.3 Lakh per semester (ref – http://iiitvadodara.ac.in/btech_admission.php)

      Dear Shailesh,

With your rank, it is difficult to get a mainstream branch like CSE, ECE, Electrical and Mechanical. You might get these branch in round 5 or beyond (but no guarantee). But of course you can get a seat in non-conventional engineering branch like Bio-Technology, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Manufacturing Processes and Automation Engineering, Production & Industrial Engineering, Polymer Science & Chemical Tech etc.

All the very best for your admission. If you have any further query then let me know.

          Shailesh,

Getting admission in special round again depends on the availability of seat in the institute for the respective branch. You might get a seat or might not for these mainstream branch. It’s all about luck at that time. So, I would suggest go for an unconventional branch in a good NIT / DTU / NSIT.

Home state ranks are not separate. Your JEE Mains rank will be the final rank. The home state cutoff ranks are declared by the college separately, to facilitate the students of that particular state to take admission with a relatively lower rank.

It is always dependent on your branch choice. But according to me it is better to take CSE in IIIT as there is more job opportunity in CSE and IIITs are CSE oriented institutes. Remaining is your choice as core branches in NITs are also good options.

      Dear Rajat,

Sorry for a delayed response. I don’t think you will get full refund of tuition fee once you would pay. In general they have a withdrawal fee. They generally deduct that amount and then return the remaining amount. And this also is valid for a duration from the date of fee payment. I guess once the classes would start, then they would not return anything.

But you have to check the counselling brochure of each to get the exact information regarding the refund process in case of a withdrawal of a seat. Hope this information would help you.

All the best for your counselling!

          Dear Deepchand,

I believe, with your score you would get almost in all the mentioned IIITs only except IIIT Gwalior. For IIIT Jabalpur and IIIT Kancheepuram, you might get the seat in some later round.

You find IIIT Sricity is the lowest in ranking among the mentioned IIITs. But the reason is it is a new institute in comparision to the others. Otherwise it is a very good, young and dynamic institute. My preference order would be as follows:

          1. IIIT Gwalior
          2. IIIT Kancheepuram
          3. IIIT Sricity
          4. IIIT Jabalpur
          5. IIIT Kerala

      Dear Shivendra,

With your rank (for both general and OBC), it is little difficult to get into any NIT or IIIT. There is a chance like you may get a seat in a new IIIT/NIT or north-eastern IIIT/NIT in later rounds or in spot admission.

You can try for the branches other than ECE, CSE, Electrical, Mechanical. There is a chance for you to get a seat in new and north eastern NITs for other branches like Civil, Bio-Tech, Metallurgy etc.

If you want CSE/ECE then try for north-eastern NITs.

You can try for NIT Pudducherry. You can even try for NIT Goa and NIT Andhra for later rounds. You can also try for old NITs with branches other than ECE, CSE and Mechanical.

      Dear Waseem,

I would suggest 4 years CSE program in IIIT Sricity is a better option than 5 years CSE in UoH. 4 years programs are always proffered over 5 years integrated program from job point of view. If you are interested to choose research as your future career option then you can give a thought for 5 years CSE in UoH.

Otherwise IIIT Sricity is a very good, young and dynamic institute. My suggestion is CSE in IIIT Sricity.

      Dear Deepchand,

There is no relation between your rank now and your package after 4 years of engineering. Package mostly depends on how skilled you would become during these 4 years. So, don’t worry about package if you are enrolling into any NIT or IIIT. Just study hard and learn the engineering skills. You will get good package after your engineering…

      Dear Waseem,

IIIT Jabalpur is a considerably older institute than IIIT Kancheepuram. So, the placement status is stable and better in case of IIIT Jabalpur. Both the institutes are equivalent in terms of study and faculties. Kancheepuram has one benefit that it is in Chenni.

You can definitely put IIIT Jabalpur at a higher place than IIIT Kancheepuram in your preference order if we will consider the placement status.

      Dear Shailesh,

With your rank you might get a seat in IIIT Delhi other than CSE (most probably in later rounds). You might also get a seat in NSIT and DTU other than CSE, ECE and Mechanical in later rounds.

Spot rounds are very much non-predictive. It’s like if there are vacant seats then you will get.

      Shivendra,

Many of the IIITs you mentioned are new and almost can be considered similar. So, ranking them based on Education and placement is difficult. You can choose among them according to your place preference. I am just ranking few of them which are little older. Few of the new ones which I are actually performing well are also ranked.

My preference order will be as below:

      1. IIIT Jabalpur
      2. IIIT Kancheepuram
      3. IIIT Sricity
      4. IIIT Vadodara
      5. IIIT Guwahati

      Dear Manish,

Good to see that you want to be an entrepreneur. I would suggest you should go for IIT Preparatory course. Because IITs do have incubation centers and these centers are supported by industry funds. IITs promote a lot for these type of activities than the other institutes.

Otherwise you can go for Production and Industrial option in NITs you have mentioned. After this you can have a PGDM degree in NITIE Mumbai. That will open up a lot of scope for your future goal.

My preference order keeping your interest in highest priority is as below:

      1. IIT Preparatory course
      2. NIT ALLAHBAD-PRODUCTION AND INDUSTRIAL
      3. NIT ROURKELA-INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

      Dear Rajat,

Both options look good. NIT Patna is a pretty old engineering institute (https://www.igniteengineers.com/15-oldest-engineering-colleges-in-india/). And Electrical is an ever green branch. If you have interest for public sector job, then you should go for NIT Patna Electrical.

But CSE from IIIT has also equally good opportunities in future.

So thumbs up for both the options. Now you should decide according to your branch preference…

Branch preference depends upon you on the basis of what specialization you want to study. Just for a suggestion, I can say that if you are very much interested in Public services like NTPC, BHEL, Power Grid or so, then go for core branches like Electrical, Mechanical or Civil. This will help you also if you want to go for IES. But if you are interested for IT jobs (India has a large options in IT), then you can go for CSE or ECE.

      Dear Sudheer,

If you are not very much branch specific, then definitely NIT Warangal will be in top. But CSE has more job opportuny than metallurgy. So, following is my preference order:

      1. IIIT Gwalior cse
      2. IIIT Jabalpur cse
      3. IIIT Kancheepuram cse
      4. IIIT Sri City cse

      7. NIT Silchar ece
      8. NIT Hamirpur ece
      9. NIT Warangal Metallurgical

Both the institutes are good… But if you have not filled yet, then I would say prefer IIIT Vadodara over IIIT Bhubaneswar.

          Dear Rajat,

IIIT Bhubaneswar is much older than IIIT Vadodara and yes, it has its own campus. That’s how it is getting higher rank than IIIT Vadodara. But IIIT Vadodara is mentored by DAIICT which is a pretty good institute. I am sure IIIT Vadodara will excel a lot in next couple of years.

      Dear Sudheer,

NIT Trichy is a top ranked institute in India. There would be placements in instrumentation branch. Don’t worry for that.

IIIT Sri City CSE is also a very good option.

CSE branch has good future scope. So if you are interested in CSE branch then definitely go for IIIT Sri City. Otherwise NIT Trichy is also good.

      Dear Parvez,

IIITs are popular for their CSE and ECE specialization and they do get good placements for B. Tech in these two branches. But I am pretty sure IIIT Guwahati would get good placement record for M.Tech as well. IIIT Guwahati is shifting to their permanent campus from this session. So they are expanding their specialisations as well. So don’t worry about placement.

      Dear Ms,

No doubt you should go for IIIT Sri City. There are many supporting reason for it.

      1. First of all IIIT is a national brand
      2. It is a government institute whereas both Thapar and LNMIIT are private
      3. IIIT Sri City is a fastest growing institute
      4. CSE in any IIIT has very good future scope.

Hope these points would convince you why you should go for CSE in IIIT Sri City

Go for Chemical in IIT Jammu until and unless you are very much passionate about CSE.

Study from IIT has its own importance. You will get everything starting from faculty till placement better in IIT.

But if you are very much interested in CSE, then go for CSE in IIIT Vadodara. This is also a considerably good option.

Mechanical engineering with specialization in automotive engineering (MAM) at DTU Delhi is a good choice. You can join any of the automobile industry like Honda, TATA, Maruti, BMW etc. You can appear GATE in Mechanical Engineering, or Automobile Engineering specialization. Even you can go for MBA in Industrial management program just like provided in NITIE Mumbai. Go for it. It has good future.

I would recommend you to go for Biotechnology in DTU. Biotechnology is equally good opportunity as ECE. Biotechnology has good research opportunities in future. In India you will get better government job option in biotechnology than ECE. Again you will be studying in DTU, which will give you much better exposure than Tezpur University. Plecement of DTU is way better than Tezpur University. That to, you will be in Delhi.

So go for Biotechnology in DTU

      Hi Aagaz,

With your rank, it is difficult to get admission in the conventional branches (CSE, ECE, Mechanical etc.) in JOSSA. I hope you can still get admission to non conventional branches in few of the NITs during special rounds. What I would suggest, you get an admission to a good UPTU college, so that if you will not get any seat during special rounds in JOSSA, you can continue with the UPTU college and you will not loose a year. But if you would be lucky enough to get a seat in any of the NITs or IIITs during special rounds, then withdraw your admission from UPTU college.
